Province Announces Funding for District Energy System in Houston

The District of Houston is benefiting from $400,000 in Towns for Tomorrow funding for Phase One of the District Energy System project to create a greener, healthier and more sustainable community for residents. Once completed, the district geo-thermal system will serve municipal and community buildings, helping reduce utility operating costs and greenhouse gas emissions.

This first phase of this multi-phase project includes installing approximately 7,600 metres of heat exchange pipe, which will provide a thermal energy sink/source for heating and cooling.

Phase Two was awarded $1,578,000 of joint Federal and Provincial funding under the Canada-BC Municipal Rural Infrastructure Fund program. The second phase consists of upgrading the Claude Parish Memorial Arena's ice plant to a geothermal heat pump system, as well as integrating the buildings into the district energy system.

The Towns for Tomorrow funding announcement was made on July 10, 2008 by Bulkley Valley-Stikine MLA Dennis MacKAY.
